The two methods of removing iron and manganese in water throughout York, Hanover, Gettysburg and Harrisburg.

Like iron, manganese can be managed in two different ways. Physically or chemically.

1) The Chemical Solution. The ion exchange process.
In this method the manganese is replaced by a sodium ion similar to the process of water softening. This does add sodium, although typically a small amount, to the product water.  There are also limitations, particularly, if the manganese is in an oxidized form prior to reaching the water treatment equipment.

2) The Physical Solution. The oxidation/filtration process.
In this process the manganese is oxidized using one of a variety of oxidizers such as air, ozone, potassium permanganate or chlorine.  This turns the manganese into a physical “clump” that can then be filtered out using a self-cleaning media filter.  Typically this is the preferred method in South Central Pennsylvania and the one typically preferred by NicMar Water as there is a more controlled outcome over a wide array of water situations.
