Nicmar | Martin Water serving the water needs of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Set along the banks of the Susquehanna River, Harrisburg is thought to have been inhabited by Native Americans as early as 3000 BC.   At the time, the swath of land was an important crossroads and rest stop for Native American traders.

The first European contact with the “Peixtin” Native Americans of Pennsylvania was made by Captain John Smith in 1608, an Englishman who journeyed from Virginia up the Susquehanna and visited the local Susquehanna tribe. In 1719 another Englishman, trader John Harris, Sr., settled in the area that was to become Harrisburg and 14 years later amassed grants for 800 acres of land.  By 1785, his son John Harris, Jr. made plans to lay out a town on his father’s parcels of land, which he named Harrisburg from the Pennsylvania German: Harrisbarig).

Thirty plus years later, in October 1812, Harrisburg became incorporated and was named the Pennsylvania state capital and has been so ever since.

Today, with population of roughly 50,000, Harrisburg is the county seat of Dauphin County and is the ninth-largest city in Pennsylvania.  The city played a noteworthy role in American history during the Westward Migration, the American Civil War, as well as the Industrial Revolution.

to play in the second half of the 19th century during the Industrial Revolution. It not only became an important railroad hub, but a major steel and iron center for the entire United States.  The Pennsylvania Steel Company plant, eventually taken over by Bethlehem Steel, opened in 1866 with the distinction of being the first in the country.

Harrisburg being in the heart of the bountiful Pennsylvania Dutch Country also has a deep agriculture and food heritage, being the home of the world famous chocolate making giant Hershey.
