Founded in 1780, Gettysburg Pennsylvania, not to be confused with either Gettysburg South Dakota or Gettysburg Ohio, is the county seat of Adams County PA with a population of 7,620 (2010 Census).
The 1.7 square mile hamlet, Located on U.S. Route 30, about 25 miles west of York, PA, Gettysburg is also known for being home to one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War which bares its name.
The world famous 1863, 3-day clash, which was lost by the South and had more casualties than the entire Vietnam War (27,000 Confederate and 31,000 Union deaths) was also the site a few months later, on November 19, 1863 of President Abraham’s Lincoln’s most famous U.S. Civil War Address during a ceremony to officially consecrate the grounds.
Physical damage from this bloodiest of battles is still visible today, 150 years later in some of the houses in the small town, notably the Schmucker House located on Seminary Ridge.
