Water Problem : Acidic Water
Acid water cannot be detected by the water’s appearance, feel or odor. Its symptoms, however, are very apparent. Acid water is corrosive and can destroy water heaters and shorten the life of water using appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers. Acid water can eat away chrome fixtures, copper pipe, fittings and metal parts of water using appliances. The corroded texture of fixtures, the blue green stains on sinks and tubs are all signs of damage from acid water. Acid water causes pinhole leaks in copper pipes and when the pipe is behind the wall or ceiling, the water damage effects can be catastrophic.
Water Problem : Bacteria
Bacteria in water can take many forms and the best way to know the type present is to have your water professionally tested. NicMar Water offers this service. We use a special sterile container and have the sample analyzed by an independent state certified laboratory. A common symptom of bacteria in water is a slime build-up in the toilet tank called a biofilm. Often different types of organic matter can casue your water to taste and smell bad. Some types of bacteria can cause serious health concerns such as e-coli. Many however, are just aesthetically unpleasant causing troublesome issues with taste, odor and bio fouling problems.
Water Problem : Bad Taste
There are myriad of reasons why water might taste bad. If you have city water, you could be tasting the chlorine or the bad taste may actually be coming from the pipes in the ground. If you have well water, it could be hydrogen sulfide, high TDS, or even bacteria. With an older home, it could be coming from the pipes in your very own house…and let’s not forget those filters in your refrigerator which, if not changed regularly, can actually make your water taste bad and potentially contain bacteria!
Water Problem : Nitrates and Lead
Nitrate (NO3) is a naturally occurring form of nitrogen (N). Water moving down through soil, carries dissolved nitrate with it to ground water. Entering the water supplies of many homeowners who use wells or springs. Drinking water high in nitrate is potentially harmful. It can cause your blood to lose oxygen and has been linked to blue-baby syndrome. Lead has been linked to brain damage and a variety of adverse health issues from interference with red blood cell chemistry and mental development in infants to long term exposure risks like cancer, strokes and kidney disease. Children and pregnant women are particularly at high risk. Now that NicMar can test for particulate lead, we are finding this problem more frequently.
Water Problem : Rotten Egg Smell
As water passes through aquifers, that contain hydrogen sulfide, some of this gas mixes with the water, the levels of which can change regularly due to rainfall and barometric pressure. Typically the odor will be most detectable at first draw in the morning and most prevalent at the faucet highest from ground level in your home. In extreme cases, it can be corrosive and cause black staining and you may occasionally see small black flakes.
Water Problem : Chlorine
Chlorine can make water smell and taste bad. Even at acceptable levels it is absorbed by the skin and can contribute to dry eyes and skin irritation as well as make conditions such as eczema worse. Breathing its vapors from a hot shower allows the body to inhale the gas where trihalomethane is immediately absorbed through the lungs and into the body organs. Chlorine in fact is a powerful toxic oxidant commonly used as a disinfectant in municipal water supplies to manage bacteria levels. In drinking water it will kill other potentially harmful organizms that seep into lakes, rivers, streams and ground water, but it is not healthy for humans.
Water Problem : Hard Water
Hard water is created when water passed through rock formations picks up calcium and magnesium. Hard water is easy to spot: it leaves a bathtub ring made up of hardness minerals and soap. This scum collects on shower walls, clings to hair, clogs skin pores and makes house cleaning extremely difficult. Hard water deposits also clog pipes, cause water heaters to operate inefficiently, and increase the maintenance on water using appliances.
Water Problem : Toxic Chemicals
Commonly referred to as Volatile Organic Contaminants (VOC’s) and Synthetic Organic Compounds (SOC’s), there is nothing organically good about these chemicals which are very dangerous man-made like TCE, PCB, THM, PCE, benzene, insecticides, pesticides and herbicides. They commonly enter drinking water from leaking underground storage tanks, industrial run off, landfills, toxic dumping/spills or were used in farming before they were known to be harmful. Many of these man-made toxins are known to cause cancer and can be ingested via drinking water, inhaled in the shower, or absorbed through your skin when bathing.
Water Problem : Bottled Water
In business and residential applications water can be expensive and create liability. 5-gallon jugs are heavy and bulky and there are many workers compensation claims due to employees lifting jugs. Traditional coolers are also open to air contamination and can be very unsanitary. Additionally, plastics used for PET water bottles are creating a huge environmental problem in our landfills. For these reasons, we do not offer bottled water and in doing so, strongly feel we are doing what’s right for our customers and the planet.
Water Problem : Iron
Iron water is created when ground water passes through iron-bearing rocks. Because iron accounts for 5% of the earth's crust, it can be found in just about all types of water supplies. Iron has the tendency to leave stains on sinks, tubs, toilets, clothing and linens, or it can form scale and clog plumbing and water using appliances while making water turn a rusty color as well as smell and taste bad.
Promate 6.0 Neutralizer | Stenner pH Correction System
The problem of low pH or acidic water can be resolved with either a calcite based acid neutralizing filter or by a pH correction system. Acid neutralizers are best used when the pH is 5.5 or higher and they require no maintenance on your part and a simple topping off the sacrificial media by NicMar Water once a year. For lower pH levels, higher flow rate requirements, or when hydrogen sulfide odor is also present, we recommend our pH Correction System. This system injects the pH buffer according to your flow rate at any given time so pH adjustment is very exact. Regardless of which is right for you, rest assured we have the solution! Luminor Ultraviolet | Stenner Well Mate Chlorinator | EPS 1000
After identifying the problem through professional testing, the process of eliminating the organisms varies by considering effective process, cost effectiveness and personal choice. Chlorination systems, like a municipal water supply, use chlorine to kill bacteria. An ultra-violet light system sterilizes bacteria as the water passes through the light chamber and may be an alternative that’s right for you. The decision to use either technology depends greatly on the water conditions and how much pre-treatment may be necessary to enable either process to work properly. For simple filtering drinking water, the EPS1000 is certified to meet or exceed the EPA requirement for the removal of bacteria, viruses and cysts such as cryptosporidium and giardia. ERO 375 HERO | Clear Solutions | ProMate 6.0 Softener
When treating for lead and nitrate the first determination must be to decide if it’s necessary to treat the whole house, or will localized or “point of use” at the kitchen sink be adequate. Because nitrate and lead are not dermal invasive, often a separate faucet at the sink, delivering Reverse Osmosis water for cooking and drinking, is considered the best method. There are other, even more cost effective methods to simply target either nitrates only or lead only. Whole house treatment for nitrate can be done by a modification of a water softener, using nitrate selective resin instead of the usual softening resin in the tank. Give us a call and we can discuss which method makes the most sense for your home. To learn more and get a FREE in-home water analysis and estimate, call NicMar | Martin Water today at 717-528-8444.
The proper solution will depend on other associated issues with the water. Most often the gas can be neutralized by air oxidation. You can check for the effectiveness of this solution in your home by simply drawing the water into a large bowl when you detect the odor, let the water sit for an hour and check to see if you can detect any odor. Typically, the odor will “gas off” into the surrounding air. The air inducted filtration system accomplishes this instantaneously at high flow rates. In extreme cases, you must use chlorine injection to oxidize the Hydrogen Sulfide gas. Voc’s, Volatile Organic Chemicals are typically treated using a lead/lag method of carbon filtration. A shell based carbon is used in two separate tanks utilizing an up flow process. When a breakthrough occurs after the first tank, it is replaced with new carbon and placed in the downstream position. The original lag tank is then placed into the first position. For higher flow rate needs, a twin tank filtration system that will reverse flow clean with treated water may be the preferred method. For drinking and cooking water the EcoWater ERO 375 is the most economical option, but it is important to know that VOC’s are dermal invasive (absorbed into the skin) and should be reduced in water that is used for bathing or situations where skin contact may occur. For higher flow rate needs, the Hellenbrand PM-6 Carbon Filter is the system of choice. For the best drinking water solution, an EcoWater ERO 375 is the best option. Iron comes in various forms. All too often a water treatment company will recommend a water softener as a solution. In south Central Pennsylvania that will not typically solve the problem. In fact, the only iron that is removed by the water softening process is iron in the Fe2 or “ferrous” form, which is not commonly found in this area. The majority of iron present in wells, in the “Pigeon Hills” area, near Spring Grove, Abbottstown, Hanover area, is the type of iron that has bonded with microorganisms, also known as “bound” iron. A water softener would have little or no effect on this type of iron. Testing must be done at the site because once the water is drawn and becomes exposed to the air, it will begin to change form. The pH is one of the single most critical factors in controlling the effectiveness of the equipment used for iron reduction.
