Reverse osmosis systems offer some distinct advantages, but for many, this technology is still a little unfamiliar. So, here we’ll put a spotlight on reverse osmosis with answers to some common FAQs.

What is R.O?

R.O or reverse osmosis features a semi-permeable, specialist membrane. Water under pressure is forced through the tiny pores in the membrane to separate any contaminants from your water supply. Domestic reverse osmosis units use membrane technology in conjunction with mechanical or carbon filters to create purified and great tasting water.

How Does an R.O System Work?

Water flows through a pre filter first to remove certain contaminants such as chlorine that could damage the membrane. After this step, the water is passed through the membrane, which will allow any dissolved solids such as lead, arsenic or sodium to pass through. The purified water is then held in a small tank until it is needed. Finally, when you turn on your faucet, the water is forced through a final carbon filter to ensure the highest quality result.

How Long Will an R.O System Last?

With the proper maintenance and care, an R.O system could last practically indefinitely. Therefore, it is vital that your R.O system is serviced regularly by a professional technician, who can replace any parts as they become worn. Typically, the semi-permeable membrane will last between three to five years, before it needs to be replaced.

Is There a Lot of Wasted Water?

While some of the water flowing through your R.O system will be used to clean the membrane, you should not notice a significant increase in your water bills. Generally, the system will only use sufficient water to fill the tank, and after this, it should automatically shut off until a tank refill is required.

Do R.O Systems Remove Healthy Minerals?

There are a number of minerals that are essential for good health, and some water treatment systems remove these along with any other contaminants in the water. Fortunately, R.O systems are very efficient, and while they can remove contaminants, these are typically inorganic materials that are difficult for the human body to process. If you are concerned about your mineral intake, it is a better idea to make dietary changes or use vitamins supplements.

Will an R.O System Increase My Electric Bills?

No, R.O systems use water pressure to operate. While there are some additional parts that may use electricity, most R.O systems don’t require these and will not affect your electric bill at all.

What Contaminants Can be Removed by R.O?

R.O systems are very efficient and can remove a wide variety of contaminants including fluoride, cyanide, copper, aluminum, chlorine, radon, sodium, nitrates, silver and many more. This can not only improve the aesthetic qualities of your water, but can also eliminate potential health risks. For example, nitrate is a common water contaminant, as it is used in agricultural processes. Elevated nitrate levels in water supplies can make it harder for your red blood cells to carry oxygen. This is particularly hazardous to infants who can develop “blue baby syndrome.”
