How to Keep Your Whole Family Properly Hydrated This Summer

Most of us look forward to the summertime, as it can mean getting the whole family outdoors to enjoy outdoor activities. Unfortunately, you also need to consider hydration to keep your family safe and beat the heat. Whether you prefer filtered or bottled water, drinking plenty of water should be at the top of your priority list. While juices, sports drinks or other drinks could help, water is the most effective way to ensure that your family is properly hydrated this summer.

The Risks of Not Being Properly Hydrated

Summer is usually a hectic time in most homes. The summer months are often packed with family vacations, summer camps, and outdoor activities. This increased activity increases the risk of dehydration, particularly in children. Additionally, new moms and pregnant women can be negatively affected if they fail to drink enough water throughout the day.

Water is needed to maintain your body temperature, and it allows toxins to be removed through urine and sweat. Water is also vital for tissues and organs to function properly. As the temperatures rise, your body can lose a great deal of water through sweat, and if this is not replenished, it can cause some serious health problems.

Signs to Look For

Water needs vary for everybody. The amount of fluid needed for proper hydration can vary according to your age, weight, sex, activity level and other factors. You can experience a variety of symptoms depending on how much water has been lost by your body. The most common signs that you’re starting to suffer dehydration are muscle cramps, dry skin, headaches, irritation, and fatigue. In severe cases, you may experience shortness of breath, increased heart rate, low blood pressure or unclear vision. If left uncorrected, improper hydration can lead to seizures, kidney damage and even death.

Tips to Maintain Hydration

While it is a good idea to be familiar with the signs of dehydration, prevention is a more effective approach. Fortunately, there are some simple steps to maintain hydration even during an active summer day.

  • Have a Water Bottle Nearby; Whether you’re traveling or spending some time outdoors, it is always a good idea to have a bottle of water nearby. If you’re very active, such as playing sport, you may need more water, so be sure to keep your water bottle filled.
  • Choose Water-Rich Foods; Although you can supplement your food with plenty of fluids, you can also help to maintain hydration and feel refreshed by choosing water-rich foods. Fruits such as melon, or strawberries and salads have a high water content, which can help to boost your fluid intake.
  • Switch to Water; For optimum hydration, swap your sweetened beverages or fizzy sodas for water. This will not only help you to stay refreshed, but also cut down on your calorie intake. Choose good quality water such as RO water and if you need a little taste boost, add a slice of lemon or lime.
  • Plan For Water Breaks; While the kids may love running wild in the summer, be sure to plan for water breaks. Keep an eye on children in the playground or near the pool and call them in for a drink break periodically to ensure that they stay hydrated throughout the day.
